Price out total cost, not unit cost. The $39 dash cams looked like a no-brainer on paper. After replacements, failed evidence, and an $8,700 settlement, they were the most expensive cameras we've ever bought. Add in installation, SD cards, and failure rates before you compare.
Granted, this approach takes more homework than grabbing the cheapest box on Amazon. You'll read spec sheets. You'll ask pointed questions about sensors and bitrates. But in my experience, that homework pays for itself.
